Welcome to The Welsh Sheepdog Society
Croeso i'r Cymdeithas Cwn Defaid Cymreig
Discover the rich history and unique characteristics of the Welsh Sheepdog. We are dedicated to preserving and promoting this exceptional breed, providing valuable resources for farmers, shepherds, and enthusiasts alike.
Our aim
The Welsh Sheepdog Society exists to preserve, promote, and develop the traditional working sheepdogs of Wales.
It's main purposes can be summed up as;
- Conservation of the breed: We work to maintain the distinct characteristics of Welsh Sheepdogs, separate from other more standardised breeds.
- Support for working dogs: Emphasised efforts towards the working side and practical shepherding ability they provide-ensuring that dogs remain skilled at herding livestock rather than being bred mainly for appearance.
- Education and awareness: Helping to promote knowledge about Welsh Sheepdogs, the histories, and their role in Welsh farming culture.
- Training and competitions: Our Society organises several training days a year, as well as a competition hosted by our branches each year. All are welcome to attend and have a go.
- Breeding guidance: Encourage responsible breeding amongst our members to retain health, intelligence, and strong herding instinct.
In short, the Society's purpose is to keep the Welsh Sheepdog a functional, working farm dog while preserving an important part of Wales' rural heritage.
